I've repeatedly attempted to use various mindmapping programs, but in the end I've always come back to pen and paper (as with AF / SF / DIT / etc.). For some reason, software always makes me feel limited in creativity (could that be age-related? :-).
If I want to keep the mindmap on the computer for easy access, I scan it into Evernote.
Personally I use Freeplane, which is I believe by another development team using Freemind's architecture. I think it has some useful add-ins not found in Freemind.

Another spin-off is Sciplore mindmapping.
Hope this is of some use.
