Former Girl Guide and leader, including camp. (I cried the day I did a resume and realized I had enough adult experience that Guides and camp could only get one line.)

As I am a military history enthusiast, what was your arm of service/regiment, if you're allowed/willing to say (my home is in Hereford!)?
I told She-Who-Thinks-She-Must be Obeyed this week that we need to make holiday plans for 2015: 200th anniversary of Waterloo plus 600th of Agincourt.
I'm currently reading Dead Men Risen: The Welsh Guards in Helmand Province, Afghanistan by Toby Harnden (ex RN, now Telegraph correspondent in US), long, well written, searing in places.

<< As I am a military history enthusiast, what was your arm of service/regiment, if you're allowed/willing to say (my home is in Hereford!)? >>
Royal Northumberland Fusiliers until 1968, then Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
<< I told She-Who-Thinks-She-Must be Obeyed this week that we need to make holiday plans for 2015: 200th anniversary of Waterloo plus 600th of Agincourt. >>
I am more interested at the moment in 2014, the 100th Anniversary of the Retreat from Mons and Battle of the Marne, both of which my regiment was involved in. It will also be the 200th Anniversary of Napoleon's Campaign in France which was fought over the same countryside.
In view of the number of Americans who read this Forum, I'd better not mention that 2014 will also be the 200th Anniversary of the Burning of the White House by you-know-who.

Thanks for that. I suppose you will literally be tracing the route of your regiment in the retreat.
WW1 is entering the national consciousness again as we approach 2014. That's a good thing because I hold a view that Britain has never really 'recovered' (however one might define that) from WW1. A glance at any memorial across the country shows the costs vis-a-vis WW2 which was the conflict of my parents' generation and thus more familiar to moi.
I am re-reading 'Peacemakers' by Margaret Asquith, it's about the 1919 Paris Conference, fascinating stuff because we are still today living with the consequences of the decisions taken, and not taken, at that conference.
Last May we took Gill's Mum (now 90) on a short break to Bruges and this included a day around and in Ypres. Gill's grandfather got his MM as a signaller with a South African unit there. It was a moving and emotional experience for her, and us.
Now to add in FV: Check accommodation for 2015 Waterloo and Agincourt

As a Canadian, I can say that Canadians wouldn't get this reference, either. (My son likes the band the Arrogant Worms. They felt the event was worth memorializing.)
I don't know if that's good (it's not a good idea to remind ones largest trading partner of such incidents) or bad (those who do not remember their history are doomed to repeat it).

Yes, my plan at the moment is to walk the exact route of both the Retreat and the Marne advance on the exact days that the regiment did it. The regimental records are sufficiently detailed for me to have already plotted the daily routes and distances.
